The Aldermen's
House is an exceptional setting for the
work of Maurice Esteve, a remarkable artist of the second half of the 20th century.
This 15th and 17th century building, which has been a listed historic monument
since 1886, houses the collection donated by Monique and Maurice Esteve.
Occupying 3 floors linked by an external spiral staircase, the paintings of the
French artist (1904-2001) are presented in chronological order.
The painting entitled " Boulevard de Belleville " (1919) is the illustration
of his early calling, whereas " Le Sculpteur " (1947), " Badour " (1958)
and " Skibet " (1979) bring out the work of reflection which has underlain
the fertile imagination of this self-taught artist throughout his life.
His remarkable drawings, his no less astonishing water colours and his collages
are exhibited in the softly-lit Lejuge Gallery and are renewed every 3 months so
as to better preserve them.
